Just as the Build-a-Bike SA initiative started from a simple but powerful idea, so this journey begins.
I always feel that if something is worth doing, there has to be a good reason for doing so. Some positive outcome. A change for the better.
This 9 day, 900km mountain bike stage race has always been on my bucket-list, but for the future. When the race organisers announced that there would be a new Single Speed category, I knew the time was right to ride it. I am a devout singlespeeder and relish the simplicity of riding without the option of shifting gears, uphill and down. I know, I know. Crazy.
The team entry fee for the race is a considerable amount to spend, so I decided to use the race as a platform to raise funds – for the entry and for charity – to do some good in this amazing country of ours.
Build-a-Bike SA runs pretty well with limited funds, so I decided to give the proceeds of the fundraising drive to another charitable organisation, called Unite For Change. The target amount to raise is R100 000 through private and corporate sponsorship.
All monies raised in excess of R40 000 will go to Unite for Change.
Myself and my partner will need to train up from a very modest level of fitness, so much riding will need to happen between now and the race start on 21 April 2017.
Stay tuned to these updates for progress reports on the training, the bikes we plan on riding, and any and all adventures along the way.
